Menlo Park, California, awaits $163,154 in federal funding for LED streetlights

The city of Menlo Park, California, has applied for and is awaiting an award of $163,154 from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The funds will be used for the first phase of Menlo Park’s five year LED streetlight replacement plan. The city plans to replace 250 existing high pressure sodium lights with EECBG funds and then an additional 215 lights as part of the Las Pulgas Community Development project funded through community development funds.

 

A staff report that is expected to be issued later this month will identify which streets will be included for LED streetlight replacement, according to Pam Lowe, associate engineer for the city of Menlo Park.

 

Menlo Park is participating in the Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) LED streetlight turnkey replacement program. This PG&E program simplifies the process of LED streetlight replacement for municipalities by supplying and installing the new streetlights, as well as disposing of the replaced fixtures. Cities must choose from an approved list of vendors in order to qualify for fixture rebates and revised rate tariffs.

 

According to Lowe, “PG&E has run reports on energy savings for Menlo Park and we anticipate saving about $15,000 per year for Menlo Park and about $13,300 annually for the Las Pulgas project.” In addition to energy savings, reduced maintenance costs will benefit the city’s annual budget.
