Mill Creek, Washington, evaluates LED streetlights in pilot

The city of Mill Creek, Washington recently completed installation of a small number of LED streetlight fixtures which will allow the city to test and evaluate the performance of outdoor solid state lighting. Located in the Mill Creek Town Center, the eight decorative streetlights were manufactured by Philips Lumec. The pilot installation will be used to calculate energy consumption and test overall fixture performance. The LED streetlight fixtures replaced existing metal halide streetlights.
The pilot installation was funded through a grant from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in conjunction with the Snohomish Public Utility District (SnoPUD). The Mill Creek Town Center was chosen for the installation because of its wide sidewalk spacing and the height of existing poles, according to Tom Gathmann, public works director of the city of Mill Creek.
The city of Mill Creek and the SnoPUD own and maintain 1,663 streetlights which are billed at a flat rate. The city’s current streetlighting budget is about $262,000 per year which would be significantly reduced if the pilot installation meets expected energy consumption calculations. “Bulb replacement is included in the flat rate we pay to SnoPUD, so we’re hoping that some of our savings will be as a result of the expected longer life of the LED fixtures,” said Gathmann. If funding becomes available, Gathmann would like to pursue additional LED streetlight installations.
