Millbrae, California, to receive $112,630 for LED streetlight replacement project

The city of Millbrae, California, will receive an award of $112,630 for an LED streetlight project. The funds, from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, are locally administered by the California Energy Commission (CEC). Millbrae will use the award to implement a 255 LED streetlight replacement project. The new LED streetlights will replace existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights.
Millbrae officials are eager to begin the project, but must first receive final approval and disbursement of funds from the CEC.
The LED streetlights will be deployed in the north east section of Millbrae and will be the first installation of LED fixtures in the city. The project supports the city’s long-term environmental and sustainability plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. “We anticipate saving almost $10,000 per year by switching to LED streetlights, which use less energy. We also calculated that our greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 33,894 kilograms each year,” said Shelly Reider, environment programs manager for the city of Millbrae.
Reider hopes to begin the LED streetlight project in the summer of 2010. City officials will most likely use the Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) turnkey program for the project. PG&E maintains a list of preferred vendors of LED streetlight fixtures and also offers rebates and rate tariffs for its customers using LED luminaires in their roadway lighting.
