Mobile, Alabama, awarded $1.9 million in EECBG funds for LED streetlights

Using funding from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, the city of Mobile, Alabama, plans to implement its first major installation of energy efficient LED streetlights. City officials hope to use the EECBG award of $1.9 million to purchase up to 1,300 new LED streetlight fixtures. However, depending on bid responses, it is possible that the number of fixtures replaced could be higher than 1,300.
“We are currently testing a variety of LED streetlight fixtures in a small pilot in one area of town. We are very interested in testing the fixture’s performance in the field in our specific conditions,” said Jennifer White, interim director of traffic engineering for the city of Mobile. According to city officials, LED streetlights currently being tested include fixtures manufactured by Best Lighting, Relume, Holophane, Duralight and King, among others. Streetlight fixtures in the pilot also include 400 watt equivalent luminaires which are intended for installation on Mobile’s major arterial roadways and along interstates I-10 and I-165 which are located within the city’s boundaries.
Final preparations for Mobile’s LED streetlight project are underway through the city’s environment department. As soon as plans are finalized, city officials expect to issue a request for proposals (RFP) to solicit bids for the purchase of only the LED streetlight fixtures. “We are hoping to use an existing maintenance contract for the installation and maintenance of the LED fixtures,” said White. The city’s RFPs are published in the local newspaper and on the city of Mobile website.
