A large scale LED streetlight installation project will soon launch in the city of Modesto, California. The city was awarded $460,000 from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and intends to purchase and install approximately 450 LED streetlights with the funds. The upcoming installation will focus on replacing all of the city’s streetlights at signal intersections, with the exclusion of state highway intersections.
“We have several fixtures installed around the city, and we have been analyzing and evaluating them. We have found the light to be significantly different from our existing fixtures. Colors are clear and there are no shadows,” said Mark Murphy, traffic operations engineer for the city of Modesto. The proposed installation will replace existing 200 watt cobrahead and 175 watt post top high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures throughout the city. The decorative post top streetlights are located in the city’s downtown area. “We expect to reduce total energy consumption by about 30% with these fixtures alone,” said Murphy.
Currently the city is charged a flat rate by the municipal utility for streetlight electrical consumption. However, in order to assess actual energy consumption, the LED streetlight fixtures in the upcoming installation will be metered. The data on actual energy usage will be tabulated and submitted to the utility for rate adjustment consideration. “The utility is very supportive of our project, and we are hopeful that rates will be adjusted once we supply the utility with precise data,” said Murphy. If additional funding becomes available, the city of Modesto would pursue another LED streetlight installation.
A Request for Proposals (RFP) is scheduled for release on January 21, 2011, with a scheduled bid opening on March 1, 2011. Project plans and specifications will be available on the city of Modesto website.
