Muscatine, Iowa, to install 320 LED streetlights with $92,256 grant

The city of Muscatine, Iowa, has been awarded $92,256 from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The award is locally administered by the Iowa Office of Energy Independence (OEI). Muscatine city officials plan to replace roughly three hundred twenty existing high pressure sodium (HPS) cobra head streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures. The project will be implemented by Muscatine Power and Water, a municipal utility.
The LED streetlights will be located along the roadway corridors leading into Muscatine, as well as the adjacent downtown area.
The city has tested fixtures from several manufacturers in a small pilot project and is eager to begin the larger scale LED streetlight deployment, according to Gary Wieskamp, director of utility relations for Muscatine Power and Water. The long term environmental plan for the city includes replacing all city-owned streetlights with LED fixtures. Muscatine currently owns and maintains over two thousand HPS streetlights.
Wieskamp anticipates issuing a request for proposals (RFP) for LED streetlight fixtures by fall 2010. However, before an RFP can be issued, Muscatine must await a ruling by the Iowa Utilities Board that will allow LEDs to be used as replacements for HPS streetlights. A favorable ruling is expected shortly. The RFP will be advertised locally and in trade publications.
