Napa, California, installs 148 LED streetlights with $100,000 EECBG award

The city of Napa, California, recently completed a first phase installation of energy efficient LED streetlight fixtures along three city streets. The installation, which was funded by an award from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and city matching funds, replaced existing high pressure sodium cobrahead streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures. The city of Napa received EECBG funding totaling $100,000 which was supplemented with leveraged funds of $16,930.
“Phase One was focused on replacing 148 existing HPS streetlights ranging from 70 watt to 400 watts with new LED streetlight fixtures. We expect to reduce energy costs by about $12,000 in the first year as well as save on maintenance in future years,” said Andrea Fox, sustainability coordinator for the city of Napa. The LED streetlights were installed on California Boulevard, Soscol Avenue and Imola Avenue. All Napa streetlights are city-owned and maintained. In the mid-1980s, the city purchased all of its streetlights from local utility Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). The city of Napa currently owns and maintains approximately 6,000 streetlights.
“Based on available funding, we would like to do additional installations of LED streetlights,” said Fox. In addition to the LED streetlight installation, the city has also replaced traffic signals with LEDs and installed LED lighting in the city’s parking structures. According to Fox, the use of LED technology will help the city reach its goal of reducing its electricity consumption and reducing CO2 emissions.
