A pilot program in Naperville, Illinois, has shown that switching to LED streetlights from high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures could save the city as much as 60% in energy consumption.

In a pilot that lasted six months, the city of Naperville installed seven LED streetlights on Diehl Road between Country Club Boulevard and Fairway Drive. Local manufacturer Poly Brite International supplied its Borealis LED streetlight for the project.

Naperville replaced existing 310 watt HPS arterial roadway streetlights with equivalent, 120 watt LED fixtures. To properly test energy consumption and savings, city officials placed meters on each of the test streetlights. Test results showed that the replacement luminaires consumed 57.6% less power than the existing HPS streetlights.

“We will have to take quite a bit of time and re-evaluate where we are with regard to a larger scale LED streetlight replacement project,” said Kathy Rendek, Naperville public works specialist. While city officials were pleased with the performance of the LED streetlights, they found the cost of replacing existing, functioning streetlights high.

The city of Naperville owns approximately 11,000 streetlights.
