Nebraska City, Nebraska, has been awarded $83,081 in federal and local funds for the installation of approximately ninety-four LED streetlights. The funds are a combination of grants from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and local city matching funds. The total award of $83,081 combines $66,464 of EECBG funds and local matching funds of $16,616.

Nebraska City officials view this LED streetlight deployment as a large scale pilot project. According to Pat Haverty, city administrator of Nebraska City, this streetlight installation will be used to test, evaluate, and judge the quality and effectiveness of LED streetlight technology for possible future retrofits. The initial project includes the replacement of 50 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) cobra head fixtures and 44 decorative HPS post top fixtures.

“We recently replaced the majority of our old mercury vapor streetlights with HPS fixtures, so some of our existing fixtures are less than five years old. Therefore, we’re not prepared to launch a full scale retrofit of all of our existing streetlights, but this project will definitely help us evaluate LED technology,” said Leroy Frana, general manager for Nebraska City utilities. City officials will be evaluating traditional cobra head fixtures as well as decorative post top fixtures. Nebraska City is committed to the historic integrity of its downtown corridor and would like to maintain the distinctive look of the decorative posts and lamps, but with the added energy efficiency of LEDs. The majority of the streetlight retrofits will be located along the commercial corridors of Nebraska City.

The Nebraska City utilities office is currently preparing the specifications for the bid document. The Request for Bids will be publicized in the local Nebraska City newspaper as well as in regional trade publications. The city will only solicit bids for the supply of the LED streetlight fixtures. Installation and streetlight maintenance will be performed by local utility crews. The publication of the bid document is expected in early fall 2010.
