Seventeen Nebraska cities will spend a total of $2.9 million to deploy LED streetlights.
The Nebraska Energy Office announced that the cities have applied for approximately $2.25 million in funds from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The federal stimulus funds, which will be locally administered by the Nebraska Energy Office, will be combined with local matching funds of roughly $627,000. A total of $2,873,513 will be spent on LED streetlights.
Of the 121 eligible cities and counties which applied for awards, twenty-one applied for funds for LED streetlights and traffic signals. Seventeen of the cities were awarded funds. Under EECBG award guidelines, eligible cities and counties are required to provide a 20 percent match of the total project cost.
Cities such as Plattsmouth, which did not receive an EECBG award, plans to undertake a large scale LED streetlight conversion project using local funding.
The anticipated start date for the majority of the streetlight projects is fall or winter 2010, with project completion dates estimated around March 2012.
Nebraska cities receiving EECBG funds for energy efficient lighting programs are Auburn, Blair, Broken Bow, Central City, Gothenburg, Hemingford, Holdrege, Mullen, Nebraska City, Nelson, Pilger, Prague, Scribner, Superior, Tecumseh, Walthill, and Wilber. The list of cities and their respective EECBG and matching funds can be found here.
