North Bay, Ontario, Canada, issues RFP for 5,567 new LED streetlights

The city of North Bay, Ontario, Canada, has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for 5,567 LED streetlights after a comprehensive evaluation of energy efficient streetlights. North Bay officials plan to replace all of the city’s existing streetlights with LED fixtures following a thorough study of both LED, induction, and other technologies.
The city-wide installation is funded by the city of North Bay and involves replacement of all of the city’s cobrahead streetlights. Overall, the city intends to install approximately 5,567 new LED streetlight fixtures.
“This is our first major installation of LED streetlights in the city of North Bay. As part of our sample study we reviewed over 30 different fixtures to help us determine performance specifications for the planned installation,” said John Severino, manager of environmental services for the city of North Bay. In addition to improved energy efficiency and increased energy cost savings, the LED streetlight installation will provide equivalent, and in some areas improved, illumination over existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights. The city of North Bay also expects to reduce energy consumption of its streetlights between 40% and 55%. According to Severino, the installation is scheduled to begin in the summer of 2011. The Request for Proposals (RFP) does not specify a single manufacturer or fixture, but does reference LED streetlight fixture specifications from several manufacturers including GE, Philips Lumec, BetaLED, Cooper Lighting, and LED Roadway.
Bid documents can be requested by calling Mr. Jim Manning, Purchasing Department, City of North Bay at 705-474-0400 ext. 2233. The RFP is currently not available online. Complete and sealed bids must be submitted to the Purchasing Department by Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. EDT.
