Oakley, California, awards LED streetlight project to Pacific Gas and Electric

The city of Oakley, California, recently awarded an LED streetlight project to Pacific Gas and Electric. The initiative is funded by an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG).
Following guidelines issued by the California Energy Commission (CEC), city officials determined that the project required a competitive bid, and as a result, the project was awarded to the low bidder, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). A total of five bids were submitted for the $168,314 project.
“We are still in the design phase of the project, but we really hope to get the project underway in July or August,” said Allen Bourgeois, assistant engineer for the city of Oakley. The proposed installation will include approximately three hundred new LED streetlights, manufactured by Leotek Electronics of Milpitas, California, which will replace existing high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures. “We are carefully determining the specific illumination needs of each area in Oakley which will receive the new LED streetlights, so that lighting levels are accurately met,” said Bourgeois. The city will utilize the PG&E turnkey program which includes fixtures, installation, rebates and EECBG compliance.
Currently, only city-owned 100 watt, 150 watt and 200 watt HPS fixtures are slated for replacement, and the city’s goal is to replace as many fixtures as possible in the turnkey program. According to city officials, the streetlight installations will be grouped in clusters throughout the city to provide as much continuity as possible for both illumination and appearance. Residential neighborhoods as well as major corridors will be the recipients of the new fixtures.
