Oakley, California, to install 320 LED streetlights using $168,314 EECBG award

The city of Oakley, California, is preparing for its first installation of LED streetlights. Oakley will use a $168,314 award from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program for its LED streetlight project. The award will be used to replace approximately three hundred twenty existing 100 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures. The project will involve only city-owned streetlights, which are cobra head style fixtures. The city of Oakley currently owns and maintains a total of approximately five hundred streetlights.
“As part of long range planning, the city is considering mandating that all new streetlights installed are LED. Already, all new city projects involving streetlights are required to use LED technology,” said Allen Bourgeois, assistant engineer for the city of Oakley. In addition to the upcoming EECBG funded project, the city of Oakley is exploring other options for replacing the remaining city-owned streetlight fixtures which include decorative fixtures.
Initial calculations indicate that by switching to LED technology, the city of Oakley can expect to reduce the energy consumption of its streetlights by nearly fifty percent. “We hope to put this project out for competitive bid in the next few weeks. We are looking for a full service response to the bid – technical support, purchase of the LED fixtures, and installation,” said Bourgeois. The bid will be advertised on the city’s website.
