Lake Orion, Michigan, to install 92 LED streetlights

The village of Lake Orion, Michigan, has received two separate grant awards which will be combined to implement an LED streetlight replacement project. The two awards, totaling approximately $100,000, will be used to purchase and install ninety-two decorative LED post top streetlight fixtures. The project will be funded by a $50,000 award from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program which is locally administered by the Michigan Department for Energy, Labor and Economic Growth. Additional funds will come from the Lake Orion’s Streetscape Enhancement Project.
The LED streetlight fixtures will replace existing decorative streetlights in the downtown area of Lake Orion. City officials plan to replace forty-two fixtures along Flint Street and Broadway as part of the Streetscape Enhancement Project. An additional fifty LED streetlights will be replaced around village neighborhoods.
“We plan to start the Streetscape project in late July or early August,” said Suzanne Perreault, executive director of the Downtown Development Authority. The village had originally planned to install only the first phase of LED streetlights using funds from the Streetscape project, but was pleased to use the additional EECBG funds to deploy additional LED fixtures, according to Perreault.
Although the project is funded by separate grants, it will be competitively bid as a single project. The request for proposals (RFP) is scheduled for release on July 9, 2010 through the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Lake Orion officials are hopeful that the project can be completed in less than one month.
