Oroville, California, to install 300 LED streetlights using $152,126 in local and federal funds

Oroville, California, plans to initiate a 300 LED streetlight deployment project in early 2011. The city of Oroville will replace approximately 300 high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED luminaires. According to city officials, the public works department will use a combination of local funds and an award from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The city anticipates spending a total of $152,126 on the LED streetlight deployment.
According to Rick Walls, director of public works for the city of Oroville, the city has evaluated several LED streetlight luminaires in anticipation of the upcoming project. “We are interested in the look and style as much as the performance of the LED luminaire, because we want to maintain a consistent look in combination with our existing cobra head fixtures,” said Walls. The proposed project will initially target replacement of 200 watt HPS streetlights.
“We are looking forward to starting this project because our initial calculations indicate that we will save approximately $17,000 per year in electricity costs,” said Walls. In addition to energy cost savings, rebates made available by Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), Oroville’s energy supplier, will result in significant savings and a shorter payback period for the city. EECBG funds were recently approved, making it possible for the city to prepare bid specifications for the request for proposals (RFP). The city plans to issue the RFP in early 2011.
