Pacifica, California, to install 50 decorative LED streetlights using EECBG award

The city council of Pacifica, California, recently approved the purchase and installation of 50 decorative LED streetlights for the city’s downtown business district. This project is the first installation of energy efficient streetlights for the city of Pacifica. The project is funded by an award from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The total EECBG award was $140,600, of which a portion will be used for LED streetlights. The project was awarded to Heritage Casting and Ironworks (HCI).
“This LED streetlight installation is part of a larger rebuilding of our downtown business district. All utilities are being relocated underground, so this was a good time to replace the existing wooden poles and high pressure sodium (HPS) cobrahead streetlights with energy efficient fixtures,” said Aren Clark, public works superintendent for the parks department of Pacifica. City officials are treating this 50 streetlight installation as a pilot to determine the effectiveness, durability and performance of LED streetlight fixtures. “The ocean air is extremely corrosive, so we are eager to see how these new fixtures perform in our unique climate,” said Clark. Public works officials have also evaluated induction technology, but have not made a determination as to which type of fixture to install in future projects.
The city of Pacifica currently maintains about 1,700 existing streetlights, the majority of which are HPS. City officials have assessed LED streetlight installations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and are motivated by the potential energy and maintenance savings of the energy efficient fixtures. The results of this first pilot will help the city determine, based on funding availability, whether additional installations will be pursued.
