Piedmont, California, uses EECBG funds to install 88 LED streetlights

Piedmont, California, plans to install 88 LED streetlights in a small, pilot-style initiative. The project will be funded by an award from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The grant award of $58,000 will be used to purchase and install approximately 88 new LED streetlight fixtures. The competitively bid project was awarded to the Amland Corporation, which will install LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by On-Q Lighting Systems of Oakland, California.
“We really view this LED streetlight installation as a pilot for the city,” said Kevin Jackson, assistant planner for the city of Piedmont. Before moving ahead with the Piedmont project, city officials evaluated an LED streetlight installation in neighboring Albany. An analysis of energy savings as well as an assessment of illumination helped a Piedmont evaluation committee determine that LED technology would be a useful addition to the city’s streets.
“As a PG&E customer we are eligible for a rebate and will also get a tariff reduction,” said Jackson. The 88 cobra head style fixtures, which will be installed on Linda Avenue, Oakland Avenue, Highland Avenue and Grand Avenue, and in some areas of the Civic Center are expected to reduce energy consumption up to 50%, based on the performance of LED technology. The city of Piedmont currently owns approximately 500 streetlights. According to the city’s climate action plan, if additional funding becomes available, more streetlights would be slated for replacement with LED fixtures.
