Pinole, California, receives $103,455 of EECBG funds for LED streetlights

The city of Pinole, California has been awarded $103,455 by the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) to replace existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures. The EECBG awards are administered by the California Energy Commission.
The awarded funds will be used to replace approximately 130 existing city-owned HPS roadway lights with LED technology. According to Pinole officials, the city will initiate a six month pilot project in several locations throughout the city using fixtures from a variety of manufacturers. The pilot projects will be used to evaluate both the performance and aesthetic appeal of the fixtures. Community feedback will be a key component of this effort.
According to Dean Allison, director of public works for the city of Pinole, “We hope to have the pilot ready to go by the summer and then have the full scale project ready to go by the fall.” The city of Pinole will be sourcing and installing the LED streetlights themselves, rather than using the Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) turnkey program. Allison said, “We decided that doing it ourselves was the better way to go.” Even though Pinole is sourcing and installing the LED streetlights, the city will still benefit from the reduced energy rates of PG&E’s tariff structure for LED technology and energy efficiency.
