Pocahontas, Iowa, to use $81,826 award to purchase LED streetlights

The city of Pocahontas, Iowa, has been awarded $81,826 in federal stimulus funds to deploy energy efficient streetlights. Pocahontas city officials plan to use the award, from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Block Grand (EECBG) program, to purchase LED streetlight fixtures.

“The plan is to replace 266 existing high pressure sodium streetlights with energy efficient LED streetlights,” said Robert Donahoo, city administrator for the city of Pocahontas. The city originally planned to begin the LED streetlight installation in early June 2010, but the discovery of an existing Iowa state utility code which stipulates that all roadway lights must be high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures has delayed the start of the project. The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities has asked the Iowa state utility board to amend the old code to include energy efficient streetlight fixtures, including LEDs.

“The new anticipated start date is around November 1, 2010,” said Donahoo. The municipal utility of Pocahontas will install and maintain the new LED fixtures after a competitive bidding process is used to select a supplier.

The city of Pocahontas has conducted a small pilot of individually metered LED streetlight fixtures. The metered streetlights indicated that LED luminaires could reduce electricity consumption by 75%. According to Donahoo, in a side-by-side comparison, the HPS fixtures used approximately 4 kilowatts of electricity per day and the LED fixtures used only 1 kilowatt of electricity per day.
