Robersonville, North Carolina, to spend $215,111 on LED streetlights

The town of Robersonville, North Carolina, plans to spend $215,111 to deploy LED streetlights. The project involves the replacement of approximately four hundred twenty existing mercury vapor and high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures. Funding of $147,250 comes from an award from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECB) program. The city of Robersonville will use additional leveraged funds to supplement the EECBG award, resulting in total project funding of $215,111.
Town officials are working to establish an accurate inventory of municipal streetlights to calculate exact energy and cost savings. Current estimates indicate the town will save about $38,102 per year in energy costs and up to $23,256 per year in maintenance costs. Energy consumption will decrease by 317,517 kwH per year after the installation is complete.
A pilot installation of LED streetlights has been in place for several months. Initial results show high satisfaction with the energy efficient LED fixtures.
“We are planning on replacing about seventy existing streetlights with LED streetlight fixtures on Highway 903 and Highway 64 and are still working to determine the exact placement locations of the remaining streetlights in our neighborhoods,” said Libby Jenkins, town manager for the town of Robersonville. As a municipal utility, the town will use its own crews for maintenance and installation of the new streetlight fixtures.
The town will issue a request for proposals (RFP) for the purchase of approximately four hundred twenty LED streetlight fixtures. According to Jenkins, the town has only recently received confirmation of the EECBG award, and therefore cannot yet determine an accurate issue date for the RFP. Once the RFP is issued, it will be advertised in local newspapers, the News and Observer and the Greenville Daily Reflector.
