Robertsdale, Alabama, plans to purchase 120 LED streetlights

Robertsdale, Alabama, was recently awarded a grant from the Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA), which will be used toward the city’s first deployment of energy efficient streetlighting. The award is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The city of Robertsdale intends to purchase and install approximately 120 LED streetlight fixtures using the $90,000 grant.
“This will be our city’s first installation of LED streetlights, and we are looking forward to the results,” said Greg Smith, city engineer for the city of Robertsdale. The city currently owns and operates about 1,100 cobrahead streetlights ranging from 175 watts to 400 watts. The majority of the city’s streetlights are 250 watt high pressure sodium fixtures. The total streetlight inventory also includes mercury vapor and metal halide. The proposed installation will be deployed on Highway 59, a state route. In preparation for the issuance of a bid document, the city is conducting a study to assess light distribution and illumination on Highway 59, according to Smith.
“We hope to have the project specifications finished by January 2012 and prepare the bid document at the same time,” said Smith. The anticipated start date for the project is February 2012. By using existing municipal crews for installation and maintenance, the city hopes to maximize the funds available for the purchase of LED fixtures. Discussions with Alabama Power and Light regarding potential tariff revisions reflecting the reduced energy consumption of the energy efficient LED fixtures are ongoing.
