Rohnert Park, California, receives approval for new LED streetlight installation

The City Council of Rohnert Park, California, recently approved a recommendation from the Department of Public Works to move forward with a planned project for additional LED streetlight installations. The project will be funded by a $75,000 grant from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. A portion of the award was used to purchase and install LED fixtures manufactured by Cooper Lighting and streetlight poles placed in four city parks. The remaining funds will be used to purchase and install up to 30 new LED streetlights for the city’s roadways.
“The proposed project will serve as a true pilot installation for the city. Although we’ve already tested two LED streetlight fixtures, that was not enough for us to be able to evaluate the technology and set standards for future lighting projects,” said Johnny Chung, energy coordinator/project manager for the city of Rohnert Park. The goal is to target existing 70 watt and 150 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights for replacement with the energy efficient fixtures. Calculations show that the LED fixtures consume approximately 50% less energy than traditional roadway lights. According to Chung, the city will utilize the Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) turnkey program to maximize purchasing power.
“Our long term goal is to change all of the city’s streetlights to LED fixtures. The challenge is to find the financing for such a project. We are looking at ways to utilize the savings that LED streetlights will generate for our budget as well as programs offered through the state or the utility,” said Chung. Although the upcoming installation make not be large in scale, the resulting goals of evaluating lighting levels, establishing competitive pricing, and developing LED streetlighting standards will help city officials establish a framework for the future, according to Chung. The proposed installation is planned to begin in about six months.
