Roseville, California, evaluates LED streetlights from BetaLED, Evolucia, King, Lumec, and Sternberg

The city of Roseville, California, is in the final phase of a streetlight evaluation program to assess LED technology on the city's roadways. The city is using a $50,000 award from the US Department of Energy's Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program to fund the installation of LED streetlight fixtures from five manufacturers. The pilot streetlights were installed on residential, collector, and arterial roadways and include decorative post-top and cobrahead fixtures.
Using EECBG funds, Roseville Electric has installed a total of five Lumec and five Evolucia LED streetlight fixtures on a collector street, five BetaLED streetlight fixtures on an arterial roadway and five Sternberg Lighting and five Lumec LED post-top fixtures. Additionally, two King LED post-top fixtures were purchased using utility funds.
"Right now, we are testing and analyzing LED lighting technology to see if it is appropriate for our community," said Kris Blair, program manager for Roseville Electric, the city's municipal utility. In addition to researching LED technology and its cost-effectiveness, utility officials are interested in comparing the quality of illumination of the new fixtures with the illumination provided by existing, high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures.
On March 10, 2011, Roseville Electric will use neighborhood volunteers to conduct a survey of the pilot test locations and will ask for subjective opinions about illumination and preference of fixtures. "If our research shows that LED technology will be cost-effective for our city, we are interested in looking at both LED retrofits as well as new construction," said Blair.
Roseville Electric plans to use the results of the citizen survey and its own research to develop criteria and specifications for any potential LED streetlight installations.
