San Francisco plans $10 million LED streetlight project

San Francisco, California, is preparing to launch a $10 million project to install 17,600 LED streetlights. Focused on city-owned fixtures, the 18 month initiative will be funded in part by a loan from the California Energy Commission.
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom established the ambitious goals for the streetlight conversion program, which will be implemented by the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC).
San Francisco is currently running an LED streetlight pilot project in its Tenderloin neighborhood. The fifty-seven LED streetlight pilot is being used to test and evaluate fixtures from two manufacturers, BetaLED and LED Roadway. BetaLED’s fixtures have been placed on Leavenworth and Jones Streets, and LED Roadway’s fixtures are located on Eddy and Turk Streets. Initial results show that both fixtures are capable of achieving 50% to 60% energy savings while meeting RP-8-00 recommended lighting levels, according to Kevin Sporer, maintenance planner for the SFPUC.
Based on test data, the SFPUC anticipates saving 5.8 million kilowatts of energy per year with the large scale LED streetlight deployment. Approximately $800,000 per year will be saved through reduced energy consumption and maintenance costs. While many manufacturers claim that LED streetlights can eliminate maintenance completely, Sporer said, “We do not see LED streetlights as maintenance free. Rather, they will allow us to use our crews more effectively and efficiently.”
The SFPUC is preparing a public solicitation for LED streetlight fixtures and smart control systems. The smart control systems will be used to help the SFPUC identify potential problems with streetlights.
