San Francisco, California, to issue RFP for the purchase of 18,500 LED streetlights

The city of San Francisco, California is preparing to issue a request for proposals (RFP) for the purchase of 18,500 LED streetlight luminaires along with wireless monitoring and control systems. The RFP is scheduled for release in August 2010. Initial evaluations indicate that the project will cost around $10 million.
San Francisco intends to replace all city owned and maintained streetlights with LED fixtures. Funding for the project will come from local funds from the city of San Francisco and possible loans from the California Energy Commission (CEC).
The city of San Francisco is currently running an LED streetlight pilot project in its Tenderloin neighborhood. The fifty-seven LED streetlight pilot is being used to test and evaluate fixtures from two manufacturers, BetaLED and LED Roadway.
