San Jacinto, California, receives $151,000 EECBG award for LED streetlights

The city of San Jacinto, California, is in the initial stages of planning for the city’s first LED streetlight installation. The project will target existing city-owned cobrahead streetlights and will mostly likely be implemented in some of the community’s older neighborhoods. San Jacinto was awarded $151,000 from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. The goal of the project, if implemented, is to replace approximately 200 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlight fixtures with LED fixtures.
“We are still in the exploration stage of the project, but, depending on which direction we go, we think it’s feasible to eventually replace all of the city-owned cobrahead streetlights,” said Mike Emberton, public works director for the city of San Jacinto. The city owns and maintains about 400 streetlights, plus an additional 800 streetlights which are owned and maintained by the city’s local utility, Southern California Edison (SCE). “Our goal is to wrap up our study by February,” said Emberton.
In addition to studying the best lighting solution for the city, officials are also working to address illumination levels in the targeted, poorly lit neighborhoods which are the mostly likely locations for an LED installation. City officials anticipate that correct illumination along with the significantly longer life of LED technology will lead to improved public safety. City officials are exploring a variety of options in the design of the program, including using the city’s own crews for labor and installation and/or “piggy-backing” with another municipality to increase purchasing power. It has not yet been determined if a request for proposals will be issued.
