San Mateo, California, to install 206 LED streetlights with $300,000 in EECBG funds

An installation of 206 LED streetlights is underway in the city of San Mateo, California. The city received an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award of $875,000 of which $300, 000 is being used for the LED streetlight project. City officials have chosen to replace existing decorative post-top and tear-drop style mercury vapor fixtures. The existing fixtures range from 70 watts to 250 watts and will be replaced with decorative LED fixtures manufactured by King Luminaire, a division of the StressCrete Group located in Jefferson, Ohio.
The LED streetlight deployment includes the purchase and installation of 56 tear-drop style decorative streetlight fixtures and 150 decorative post-top fixtures. “The project will be located primarily in the downtown area where we hope the new streetlights will be clearly noticeable by our citizens,” said Susanna Chan, city engineer for the city of San Mateo. The LED fixtures chosen for the installation are anticipated to significantly reduce energy consumption and are eligible for the Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) rebate program, resulting in additional savings for the city.
The city of San Mateo has a sustainability initiative which includes replacing existing high pressure sodium and mercury vapor streetlights with energy efficient technology. “Depending on the availability of funding, we hope to also begin changing out our traditional roadway lights throughout the city,” said Chan. San Mateo currently has an inventory of about 6,800 streetlights. According to Chan, the city is testing and evaluating LED roadway fixtures in a small pilot. Updates regarding the project will be posted on the city’s website.
