Santa Monica, California, issues RFP for 500 LED streetlights

Following a small pilot program to test energy efficient streetlights, the city of Santa Monica, California, has issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for approximately 500 LED streetlights.
Santa Monica plans to deploy the LED streetlights by the beginning of July 2011. The city of intends to install approximately five hundred new LED streetlight fixtures on residential streets and on the Santa Monica pier. The project is funded by a $668,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award from the US Department of Energy.
“The goal is to replace approximately 500 existing cobrahead streetlights in residential neighborhoods with LED fixtures. We will also replace a number of cobrahead, pendant and floodlight fixtures on the Santa Monica pier with LEDs,” said Carlos Rosales, civil engineer for the city of Santa Monica. The city anticipates a 40% reduction in energy consumption for the new residential LED fixtures, and approximately 30% in savings for the fixtures installed on the pier. In addition to the energy savings, the anticipated longer life of the LEDs will also result in reduced maintenance costs for the city. “For our proposed project, we are following the LED streetlight specifications established by the city of Los Angeles,” said Rosales.
A Notice Inviting Bids was issued on March 22, 2011. Complete bid documents and project specifications are available on the PlanetBid website. Complete bids must be submitted to the Office of the City Clerk by Thursday, May 5, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. PST.
