Saratoga, California, prepares to install Philips Hadco LED streetlight fixtures with $168,675 in EECBG funds

The city of Saratoga, California is prepared to begin a streetlight replacement project that targets city-owned decorative post-top fixtures for replacement with LED luminaires. This project focuses on ninety-seven streetlights located in the historic downtown shopping district of the city. Saratoga was awarded $168,675 from the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program funded by the US Department of Energy. The California EECBG awards are locally administered by the California Energy Commission (CEC).
“The EECBG grant which was awarded to Saratoga is a Direct Purchase Grant, so we are not required to solicit bids for the purchase of these new LED fixtures,” said Shawn Gardner, an official with the Saratoga parks department. The city has identified Philips Hadco decorative post-top LED luminaires for the ninety-seven streetlight replacement project. The current fixtures are 100 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights. Initial calculations indicate that the new LED luminaires will result in a 50% reduction in energy consumption.
According to Gardner, local energy utility Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) owns the majority of streetlights in the city of Saratoga, and the majority of current streetlights are the traditional cobra head style fixtures. Any long term plans for additional streetlight replacements or retrofits would involve only city-owned streetlights. Gardner anticipates starting the replacement of the downtown historic streetlights in 2011, with a target completion date for the same year.
