Scribner, Nebraska, awarded $281,486 to replace all existing streetlights with LEDs

The city of Scribner, Nebraska, has been awarded $281,486 for an LED street lighting project that will replace all of the city’s existing streetlights. Funding for the project is from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and local matching funds. The streetlight project, which will involve approximately two hundred streetlight fixtures, will be deployed throughout the residential and business districts of Scribner.
Energy calculations indicate that the city of Scribner will reduce energy consumption for streetlights by nearly 50 percent. As a municipal utility, the energy savings will be immediate for city residents. The grant award will be used primarily for the purchase of the LED streetlight fixtures, and the installation will be completed by the city.
“We are hopeful that we can replace all of our existing high pressure sodium streetlights with this award,” said Al Vacanti, city administrator for the city of Scribner, “The EECBG award is for $225,189 and Scribner matching funds total $56,297, according to Vacanti.
This LED streetlight project is required to be advertised for competitive bid, in accordance with Nebraska Energy Office (NEO) regulations. Scribner officials have not yet determined the date that they will issue a request for proposals (RFP). The project completion date is targeted for the end of the 2011 calendar year.
