Seattle, Washington, seeks to evaluate and qualify new LED streetlight fixtures for upcoming 10,000 streetlight installation

The city of Seattle, Washington, continues to expand its commitment to energy efficiency by entering the next phase of its large scale LED streetlight installation program. The city plans to purchase and install up to 10,000 new LED streetlights in 2011 and is in the process of qualifying fixtures which will be considered for the new installation.
A sample request from vendors document was issued by Seattle City Light, the city’s municipal utility, calling for manufacturers to submit LED streetlight fixtures for testing and evaluation for potential inclusion in the upcoming project. Only fixtures which have been submitted and processed for formal review will be recognized as qualified. “The purchasing process will be based on pre-qualified fixtures only,” said Edward Smalley, of Seattle City Light.
The streetlight evaluation will be conducted in four steps. Lighting Design Lab, which has contracted with Seattle City Light to perform the evaluations, will (1) review documents from manufacturers and determine if the fixture is viable for further examination; (2) perform detailed computer simulations using provided photometric reports; (3) acquire a sample fixture from those manufacturers that conform to criteria; and (4) acquire four additional samples for additional testing.
