Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin, has been awarded $153,800 in federal stimulus funds, a portion of which will be used to replace conventional roadway lighting with energy efficient LED streetlights.
The city of Sheboygan Falls received the $153,800 grant from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Grant (EECBG) program. The majority of the award will be used to replace an undetermined number of streetlight fixtures.
According to Sheboygan Falls city clerk treasurer, Joel Tauschek, “A portion of the grant will go toward LED streetlights, and we’re also looking at induction lights. However, we are leaning toward LED technology.” The decision will be finalized within three weeks.
Sheboygan Falls has installed several LED and induction streetlight fixtures to test in a small pilot program. The pilot, which has been running for about two weeks, is being used to test fixtures as well as solicit public feedback.
City officials have not yet determined the exact location of the new LED streetlight fixtures but believe they will most likely be near the downtown area. The city is also considering replacing a small number of decorative streetlights with LED fixtures in city parks. Tauschek hopes to have the project started by July 2010 and completed by the fall.
As a municipal utility, Sheboygan Falls will immediately benefit from the reduced energy consumption of LED streetlights. Expected savings from the reduced electricity consumption of LED fixtures are as high as 50%. “Our lights are metered so we know how much energy is consumed,” said Tauschek. Sheboygan Falls owns and maintains all city streetlights.
