St. Louis, Missouri, uses $300,000 EECBG award for LED and induction streetlight pilot

The city of St. Louis, Missouri, has received a federal grant to implement a pilot installation of LED streetlights on city streets. The city received a $300,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG), from the U.S. Department of Energy. The purpose of the LED streetlight pilot is to test and evaluate the performance of the energy efficient fixtures and determine actual functionality in field conditions. In conjunction with LED fixtures, the city is also installing and testing induction technology.
“This demonstration project will help us determine how LED streetlight fixtures will perform on our streets and in our conditions,” said Steve Runde, commissioner of traffic for the city of St. Louis. The city is in the process of installing 540 energy efficient streetlights as part of the overall pilot, which includes 180 LED fixtures manufactured by Beta LED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Wisconsin, 180 LED fixtures manufactured by LSI, of Cincinnati, Ohio, and 180 induction fixtures. The induction fixture which is being installed is part of a retrofit kit which will be installed into the existing housing.
There are currently about 52,000 city-owned and maintained streetlights in St. Louis. According to city officials, the city is working on developing a sustainability document for streetlighting which features energy efficient lighting fixtures. According to Runde, anticipated energy savings are approximately 30% of current consumption, which would create significant cost savings for the city. St. Louis currently budgets about $1.45 million per year for electricity consumed by the city’s streetlights.
“As part of the demonstration project, we will be taking readings and submitting maintenance reports on the installed fixtures. Additionally, we are focused on evaluating the real life of the fixtures installed,” said Todd Waelterman, director of streets for the city of St. Louis. The reports will be made public and will also be shared with manufacturers.
