The city of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, has been awarded $159,400 to be used for the purchase of energy efficient LED streetlights. The grant was awarded by the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Grant (EECBG) program and will be used to replace existing high pressure sodium luminaires with LED technology.
Stevens Point has been conducting a pilot program to test a variety of energy efficient streetlight fixtures for nearly six months. The pilot involves fixtures from six different companies and evaluates quality of light as well as energy savings and efficiency. Lance Musack, engineering technician for the city of Stevens Point and LED pilot project manager, said that the city is still analyzing energy use and cost. Preliminary results indicate that energy efficient fixtures will result in approximately $150,000 in annual energy cost savings.
According to officials, the city’s long term goal is to replace all city owned streetlights with LED fixtures.
According to Musack, “We would like to start the project mid- summer 2010, and it will be competitively bid.” Stevens Point will coordinate both the purchasing and installation of the LED streetlight fixtures. The anticipated project completion date is December 2010.
