The city of Superior, Nebraska, has been awarded $317,800 in federal and local funds for the implementation of an LED streetlight project. The $250,000 federal portion of the award comes from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. Local matching funds of $67,800 were provided from funds set aside for municipal projects.
City officials intend to replace approximately 596 existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED cobra head fixtures. The first phase of the project will replace nearly all existing city-owned streetlights. The LED streetlights will be deployed in residential neighborhoods and on arterial roadways. Decorative streetlight fixtures, located in the city’s park, will not be included in this stage of the project. If funds become available, city officials would like to eventually replace these fixtures as well.
As a municipal utility, reduced energy consumption will result in immediate savings for the city. Calculations indicate annual energy cost savings of approximately $19,200.
According to Larry Brittenham, utility manager for the city of Superior, “We would like to award the project by mid-August and have the project started by September. Our energy cost savings will be significant following the switch to LED technology.” Responses to the request for proposals (RFP) must be submitted by July 30th. . © 2010 New Streetlights LED streetlight, LED streetlights, LED street light, LED street lights, LED streetlamp, LED streetlamps, LED street lamp, LED street lamps |
