Switching 52 million US street and highway lights to LED fixtures would have saved 20.2 terawatt hours in 2010

A recently published study has quantified opportunities and potential energy savings estimates relevant to the LED streetlight sector.
According to the study, “Energy Savings Estimates of Light Emitting Diodes in Niche Applications,” the estimated installed base of roadway lights in the United States in 2010 included 26.5 million street lighting lamps and 26.1 million highway lighting lamps, resulting in a total of 52.6 million roadway lighting lamps.
The estimates were established through interviews of municipal, city and state transportation department, and federal highway officials to develop street lighting inventory data for 25 local governments. The data was then extrapolated to a national installed base.
The study determined that the average roadway lamp in the United States operates 12 hours per day. Had the entire US installed base of 52.6 million roadway lights been switched to energy efficient LEDs, 20.2 terawatt hours of electricity could have been saved in 2010. This potential electricity savings is the equivalent of the total annual electricity consumption of over one and a half million American residential households.
