Tanana, Alaska, receives $20,000 for LED streetlights

The city of Tanana, Alaska, has been awarded $20,000 in federal stimulus funds for energy efficiency projects. This formula grant, from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, is administered locally by the Alaska Energy Authority (AEA) and will be used to purchase approximately twenty-two LED streetlight fixtures. Tanana currently owns and maintains thirty eight existing high pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights.
The LED streetlight replacement project will be deployed in the neighborhoods surrounding the health clinic, senior center and school and will be spaced block by block. Outside the neighborhood areas of Tanana, the streetlights are more widely spaced and this will enable city officials to maximize the number of LED replacement fixtures for installation.
Because of extremely high energy costs, Tanana city officials are eager to begin the LED streetlight replacement project. “We currently pay 76 cents per kilowatt hour for our streetlights, so by switching to LED streetlights we will immediately benefit from the savings because of the lower energy consumption of those fixtures,” said Bear Ketzler, city manager for the city of Tanana.
City officials have been working closely with the city of Fairbanks, Alaska, a regional leader in LED streetlight deployments. “We’d like to have the project finished by August,” said Ketzler. As required by EECBG guidelines, the project is expected to be competitively bid.
