Tecumseh, Nebraska, receives $186,954 for LED streetlights

The city of Tecumseh, Nebraska, has received an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award as well as local matching funds to install ninety five new LED streetlight fixtures. The EECBG award is funded by the US Department of Energy and locally administered by the Nebraska Energy Office (NEO).
The EECBG award of $149,563 will be combined with local matching funds of $37,391, for total project financing of $186,954.
According to Brian Chaffin, engineer with Olsson and Associates, “Tecumseh will replace an equal number of existing mercury vapor and high pressure sodium streetlights with LED fixtures.” The new fixtures will be installed on existing poles, arms, and wires. Tecumseh city crews will install and maintain the new LED streetlights. City officials anticipate replacing thirty six 175 watt mercury vapor fixtures, eight 250 watt mercury vapor fixtures, and fifty one 250 watt high pressure sodium fixtures. The existing fixtures will be replaced with lower wattage LED fixtures resulting in energy savings of 52,538 kWh.
Initial calculations indicate that based on twelve hour per day of usage, the city will save approximately $4,366 annually in energy costs.
A Request for Proposals (RFP), as required by the NEO, should be available by fall or winter 2010. RFPs are generally publicized in the local newspaper and in regional trade publications. To meet EECBG award guidelines, the project must be completed by March 2012.
