Tucson, Arizona, installs LED streetlights from BetaLED and Cooper Lighting

The city of Tucson, Arizona, recently completed a federally funded LED streetlight project which involved the installation of 850 new LED streetlight fixtures.
Tucson used a $425,000 Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) from the U.S. Department of Energy to fund the project. The funds were used to purchase and install the energy efficient LED fixtures in Tucson neighborhoods with aging low pressure sodium (LPS) fixtures. The total project included 562 LED fixtures manufactured by Cooper Lighting of Peachtree City, Georgia, and 284 LED fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Racine, Wisconsin.
City officials used a three month pilot program to test fixtures from three selected manufacturers: Philips Hadco, Cooper Lighting and BetaLED. Ultimately, Hadco withdrew its fixtures from the bid process with only Cooper Lighting and BetaLED continuing to completion. “The neighborhoods noticed the new fixtures and there has been a very positive response. Citizens have remarked about colors appearing more vivid with the new illumination,” said Ernie Encinas, transportation superintendent for the city of Tucson. City officials targeted neighborhoods with LPS fixtures which had begun to fail due to UV ray damage to the fiberglass housing.
The city anticipates annual savings of up to $36,000 as a result of the LED streetlight installation, according to Encinas. The city’s streetlights are metered, therefore savings based on actual energy consumption will be immediate. “We hope to take the energy savings from this installation and use that money to purchase additional fixtures in the future,” said Encinas.
