Tulalip Tribes of Washington install 165 LED streetlights from BetaLED

The Tulalip Tribes of Washington recently completed its first installation of LED streetlights. The project, funded by a $208,000 award from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program, was the first installation of energy efficient lighting on the reservation. The installation was located in the Quil Ceda Village, the business district of the Tulalip Tribes, and was focused on replacing all reservation-owned streetlights. Public works officials selected streetlight fixtures manufactured by BetaLED, a division of Ruud Lighting of Wisconsin.
“We replaced 165 existing 400 watt metal halide streetlights with BetaLED fixtures of significantly lower wattage which will consume a lot less energy,” said Dory Roanhorse, project engineer for Quil Ceda Village – Tulalip Tribes of Washington. The Tribe is working with the Snohomish Public Utility District (SnoPUD) on assessing the newly installed technology for energy efficiency. Both the metal halide and LED streetlight fixtures are metered and data collected will enable an accurate comparison of the performance of both fixtures.
“There are many more streetlights throughout the reservation that we would eventually like to replace with energy efficient streetlights, but right now, LED streetlights are prohibitively expensive,” said Roanhorse. If additional funding, similar to the EECBG program becomes available, the Tulalip Tribes would actively pursue additional LED streetlight installations. “Public feedback has been extremely positive regarding the new LED streetlights, and we definitely hope to do more installations in the future,” said Roanhorse.
