Twenty Indiana cities receive $5 million award for LED streetlight program involving over 6,800 fixtures

The Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program has awarded $5 million to the Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA) to implement a 6,811 LED streetlight program. The award will be distributed to twenty member communities throughout the IMPA network. Individual LED streetlight retrofit projects will vary in size based on the street lighting needs of each community. Member communities are cities with small populations, ranging in size from under 200 to over 15,000 inhabitants.

The IMPA is a wholesale provider of power to its member cities and towns. Currently IMPA members and staff are working together to revise the tariff structure to reflect the reduced energy consumption of LED streetlight technology.

“We are putting together the request for proposals (RFPs) for the project right now and hope to have it released this summer. Our member communities our eager to get started,” said Susan Reed, manager for member services. The RFP will solicit bids for the purchase of approximately 6,811 LED streetlights, which will be installed by each member’s local utility. “Our initial goal is to purchase nearly seven thousand LED streetlights, but we’re hoping that as costs of the fixtures continue to come down that this number will actually increase,” said Reed.

Anticipating energy cost savings, each member community has pledged to reinvest 50 percent of its realized savings into new energy efficient projects for a period of five years. These funds will all be managed locally. Each community will identify additional energy efficient projects and direct the reinvestment of the funds.
