US Department of Energy to release draft performance specifications for LED roadway lighting

To aid municipalities considering LED streetlights, a consortium formed by the US Department of Energy plans to release a draft LED streetlight specification.
The U.S. Department of Energy created the Municipal Solid State Street Lighting Consortium as part of its market-based programs. The purpose of this organization is to share technical information and experiences related to LED streetlighting and also serve as an objective resource for evaluating new products. Municipalities, utilities and energy efficiency organizations are eligible for membership in the consortium.
The Consortium offers a variety of resources to guide users in assessing solid state lighting technology for specific roadway applications. In keeping with this goal, the Consortium is in the process of publishing a draft of performance specifications for LED roadway lighting. This document is scheduled for publication on the Consortium website the week of March 14, 2011. “We are interested in getting comments and feedback on the draft document,” said Edward Smalley, director of the Municipal Solid State Street Lighting Consortium.
The publication aims to serve as a resource for municipalities considering deployment of LED streetlights by categorizing each factor that needs to be considered before choosing an LED streetlight fixture. Considerations include required information submissions for each luminaire such as photometric data, performance requirements, and warranty information. When finalized, the publication can serve as a checklist for the municipal user as well as for the manufacturer to ensure that all specifications are adequately addressed.
