Ventura, California, uses $339,000 EECBG award to install LED streetlights

The city council of the city of Ventura, California, has approved a department of public works recommendation to purchase and install 500 LED streetlights. The council authorized the purchase and installation of LED streetlights manufactured by Leotek Electronics, of Milpitas, California. The LED cobrahead fixtures will replace existing, city-owned high pressure sodium (HPS) cobrahead streetlights. The project is funded by a $339,000 award from the US Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG).
“We will be working in batches of 100 fixtures at a time, and we plan to begin installing the first 100 fixtures in about six to eight weeks,” said Jeff Hereford, civil engineer for the city of Ventura. Since only city-owned streetlights are targeted for replacement, only signalized intersections will be lit by the new LED fixtures. The project was awarded to Leotek following a second round of bidding after the first low bidder, GE, was unable to meet the city’s wattage specifications. In preparation for the upcoming installation, the city conducted tests, evaluations and assessments of LED streetlighting for over one year, according to Hereford.
“In addition to the EECBG funded project, we also are planning on using a $65,000 California Energy Commission (CEC) loan to install decorative LED streetlights in our downtown parking lots,” said Hereford. The CEC offered 1% interest loans to municipalities for energy efficient projects. For its decorative post top LED streetlight project, the city of Ventura will be installing and evaluating fixtures manufactured by King Luminaire, a division of the Stresscrete Group.
