Walthill, Nebraska, awarded $166,057 for LED streetlight project

The village of Walthill, Nebraska has been awarded an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award from the US Department of Energy for the deployment of LED streetlights. The village is also using local matching funds. Total funding for the project is $166,057, which will be used to purchase approximately one hundred forty LED streetlight luminaires.
According to village officials, Walthill will replace twenty 450 watt high pressure sodium (HPS) fixtures on Main Street. The remaining fixtures targeted for replacement are 175 watt mercury vapor fixtures located throughout the village’s residential areas. Both HPS and mercury vapor fixtures are cobra head style.
Initial plans include a one block test area where new LED luminaires will be installed. The fixtures will be evaluated on both technical and aesthetic merits before the larger scale project is implemented. “We expect significant savings from the LED streetlight project, both from reduced energy consumption and reduced maintenance” said Rita Dunn, member of the Walthill Revitalization Committee. Preliminary calculations indicate annual savings of up to $41,000.
Currently a significant portion of Walthill’s maintenance budget is spent on replacing vandalized streetlights in the village residential areas. Because the mercury vapor bulbs are exposed, they are easily broken by vandals. Dunn hopes that the design of the LED fixtures and the acrylic covers will make it more difficult to tamper with or damage the new fixtures.
A request for proposals (RFP) is expected to be issued in September 2010, with an anticipated project start date of October 2010. The RFP will be advertised in the local newspaper, The Pender Times and in the Sioux City, Iowa papers.
