Washington, D.C., seeks LED streetlight fixtures for testing and evaluation

Washington, D.C., is initiating a new phase of testing and evaluation of LED streetlights for future installations. This second phase of testing by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) follows passage of legislation by the Council of the District of Columbia which calls for more extensive testing of LED fixtures in traditional and decorative pedestrian applications.
“The Smart Lighting Study, passed by the D.C. Council, will include all wattages of 150 watts and higher for streetlights, as well as all wattages for decorative pedestrian lights,” said John Lisle, of the DDOT. The study will assess economic efficiency, energy efficiency, public safety, aesthetics, as well as other factors related to LED streetlights. As a component of the study, the DDOT will also solicit feedback from the public to determine citizen observations and satisfaction with the new energy efficient streetlights. “Vendors will be asked to supply sample fixtures for testing in the lab and on the streets,” said Lisle. The study will be conducted by contractor SAIC.
The DDOT is starting the first phase of LED streetlight installations and is preparing to deploy its first phase of alley lighting in the early part of this year. DDOT will be installing the LS-2 LED streetlight fixture manufactured by Lighting Science Group of Florida.
