Washington, Indiana, installs 315 GE LED streetlights

During the first week of December, the city of Washington, Indiana, started the installation of over three hundred LED streetlights as part of a project funded by the Indiana Municipal Power Agency (IMPA). IMPA was awarded $5 million from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program for the purchase and installation of LED streetlights for its member communities. The city of Washington is installing 315 LED streetlight fixtures manufactured by GE.
City officials hope that the installation is the first in a series of additional LED streetlight projects throughout the community. The current project deployment is taking place along the city’s main arterial roadways, US 50 and 2nd Street. The GE LED streetlight fixtures are replacing existing high pressure sodium (HPS) and mercury vapor streetlights.
“The city is motivated to pursue additional installations of LED streetlights if funding becomes available,” said Anita Ash, utility office manager for the city of Washington. City officials are driven by the potential energy and cost savings of the new streetlight technology and continue to look for additional ways to save energy and resources. The city’s annual spending on for streetlighting is approximately $120,000. The city of Washington will set aside 50% of the savings resulting from the LED streetlight installation and use it for other energy efficient projects throughout the community. “Working with IMPA on the purchase and installation of LED streetlights has been extremely easy, and we are excited by the simple solution that it presented for our city,” said Ash.
