Washington Township, Michigan, awarded $103,787 for LED streetlights

An Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) award has been awarded to Washington Township, Michigan for the purchase and installation of at least twenty LED streetlights. The LED Demonstration Grant is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy and locally administered by the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth (DELEG). Michigan LED Demonstration Grants fund implementation of projects to install LED fixtures and increase public awareness about energy efficient technology.

For Washington Township, this LED streetlight installation will be the first large scale deployment of streetlights in its downtown village area. There are currently only seven streetlights surrounding the village but none in the immediate commercial area. “We chose the village area of the Township for our LED streetlight project because we are trying to focus on developing the area. We want to show our local small businesses our commitment to them and to the village,” said Kathy Bosheers, township clerk for the Charter Township of Washington.

Township officials are hoping to install as many LED streetlights as possible through a competitive bidding process. The project will involve the purchase and installation of complete streetlight units, including poles. Bosheers anticipates that the request for proposals (RFP) will be issued in July and that the project will start this fall. RFPs will be advertised in the Michigan Intergovernmental Trade Network (MITN).

According to Bosheers, the long term goals of Washington Township are to replace the remaining existing township streetlights with energy efficient fixtures. With an anticipated energy use and operating cost reductions of up to 59%, the benefits to the community will be substantial, said Bosheers.
