Waterford Township, Michigan, to spend $290,000 on LED streetlights, LED parking lot lights, and other outdoor lights

Waterford Township, Michigan, is preparing to deploy its first LED streetlight installation on the township’s municipal campus. Funding for the project is provided by an award from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program. An award of $290,000 will be used for the installation which includes streetlights, parking lot lights and outdoor lighting.
This planned installation will only replace township-owned streetlights. Waterford Township currently has approximately three thousand streetlights, most of which are owned by Detroit Edison. Currently, the township pays the utility a monthly flat fee for each streetlight. Township officials hope to renegotiate the tariff structure to a lower rate that reflects the lower energy consumption of LED streetlights.
“If the cost savings justify it, then we will be interested in replacing more streetlights,” said Bill Fritz, engineering superintendent for the Waterford department of public works. The LED streetlight installation is expected to reduce energy consumption and result in lower maintenance costs. The project, including the LED fixtures and installation, was awarded to McNulty Electric of Lexington, Michigan.
