Watertown, Massachusetts, is the recipient of a Green Community grant from the state of Massachusetts, and a portion of the grant will be spent on LED streetlight fixtures. The grant award is part of a $3.6 million program funded by the state for green and energy efficient community initiatives. Watertown received $193,000, most of which has been allocated for the purchase and installation of LED streetlights throughout the town’s neighborhoods. The city’s initial plans are to spend the majority of the funds on approximately 100 LED streetlight fixtures, though installation of some parking lot and park lights is likely to be a part of the project.

“We already have some streetlights in our community that have been replaced with LED fixtures, and we also updated all of our traffic signals with LEDs, so the technology is very familiar to us,” said Raeleen Parsons, director of purchasing for the town of Watertown. With the goal of leveraging the Green Community grant, the town is currently in discussion with NSTAR, the local utility, about a possible matching grant program. The matching funds would enable the town to maximize its purchasing power and install additional LED streetlight fixtures.

Watertown officials anticipate significant cost savings as a result of the energy efficient streetlight installation. All of the streetlights are owned by the town and the town pays a metered rate based on the energy consumption of each streetlight. Approximately $50,000 is budgeted annually for streetlight maintenance, a figure which may also be reduced as a result of the longer life of LEDs.

Depending on the scope of services, as determined by purchasing officials, the upcoming project will most likely be open for a competitive bid. “We plan to start the project in the next few months,” said Parsons. Requests for Proposals will be posted on the town’s website.
