Waynetown, Indiana, receives $247,000 EECBG award for LED streetlights and traffic signals

The city of Waynetown, Indiana, has been awarded $247,000 in federal funds, which will be used to replace existing streetlights and traffic signals with LED fixtures. The grant award is from the Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program and is administered by the Indiana Office of Energy Development (IOED). Waynetown is awaiting final approval from the IOED in order to begin the project.
This EECBG funding round is being done on a reimbursement basis, meaning that once the project starts, the city of Waynetown will submit an invoice to the IOED for reimbursement. This process, unlike the approach taken in many other states, will enable the Waynetown to begin the project very quickly. “We anticipate bidding out the project around July 2010 and finishing by the end of the year,” said Somer Stephens, grant administrator of the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs.
The LED streetlight replacement project will be deployed along the U.S. 136 (Washington Street) corridor from Wingate Road to Alamo Road.
“This project is another great way for Waynetown to become a greener city,” said Stephens. The city of Waynetown also serves as a municipal utility, so the anticipated reduction in energy consumption will immediately result in energy cost savings for the city. City officials have calculated that the switch to LED fixtures will result in annual savings of approximately $15,000.
